Wine at NTUC Fairprice Finest Bukit Timah Plaza (16 Sept 07)
-
Hiya all, popped down to NTUC Fairprice Finest over the weekend as I promised to do a review of the place. In general, the newest upmarket supermart of NTUC seems a little out of place in the older Bukit Timah Plaza. Just getting into the carpark was a headache with cars trying to get out at the same time. But I must say that they have a good concept. The convenience was the ATMs, KFC, Chocs, Unity pharmacy and Singapore pools all located WITHIN the supermarket itself. The food in general, at least in our perception, was fresher and consisted of more quality produce.
For the wine section, there is a decent range of wines from new world and old world. The wine chiller was somewhat plain in the setup, except for the cool sliding glass door. But they did have a good range of old world french wines from nice vintages of 2000 and 2003.
Chateau Branaire 2000 at $120
Chateau Talbot 2000 at $135
Chateau Beychevelle 2003 at $95
Chateau Larrivet Haut Brion 2000 at $124
Chateua Branaire Ducru 2003 at $138
Chateua Bahans Huat Brion 2000 at $112
I was also fortunate to chance upon Ch'ng Poh Tiong giving a lecture on wines, which was well attended ( he is hidden in the photo).
The most interesting wine I found there was a Haut Batailley 1994 going for $78.
So in conclusion, a good effort by NTUC to provide a more exquiste range of wines.

with regard to wine at supermarts, carrefour suntec has a superb selection.
unfortunately for them, the wine promoters are always drinking on their samples (at work)!
i strongly believe these samples are meant for customers. for eg. a promoter at vivomart recently poured me a sample cup of chateau la prade.
i thought that was very dutiful of the promoter and genuinely interested in promoting their wines as compared to "this is another good bottle, very smooth very aromatic"
if you observe, you'll be suprised at how blatant the carrefour suntec promoters are at drinking their samples together. you could see their flushed faces, stained/filled wine glass on shelves behind the bottles and even detect wine in their breathe.
of course the decision is theirs to make but i am disappointed as a customer.
i even have photograph if you need illustration.
could you share your view on this?

anotherdram, thanks for your comments.
Fortunately or unfortunately, I have not had the unpleasant experience that you had at Carrefour. Well, most of these promoters are also part-timers and have no vested interest in whether the customer leaves with a good wine shopping experience. They are just there to push the sales.
I guess my view is that if you like Carrefour (which I do too for their choice of french wines) go down during their wine fairs held two times per year. The promoters are more experienced and come from the distributors themselves instead of hired help. There's one coming up this 20-23 Sept at Suntec City.
Cheers!
