Dempsey Road Wine Session

-
-
Our Mr Chong just came back from Holland and we had a small gathering for KK, Ms Poh and myself to catch up with him, brought him to our regular haunt which was the Wine Company. We had the usual cheese platter and chicken wings as we managed to get there earlier this time. Also tried the assorted sausages which were very fresh and nice, but I think I will still stick with the Cheese platter. We had the German wine again which of cos was well liked by all at the table…heard it’s one of the more popular wines requested by guests, refreshing and mildly sweet on the palate.

Wine Entry : Shingle Peak Sauvignon Blanc 2005 (New Zealand)

Got this bottle from DFS at S$34 just before the flight to Taiwan, drank it in Taiwan and found it to be exceedingly typical of the New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs meant to be drunk young. A vibrant and aromatic Sauvignon Blanc showing lifted gooseberry and pear characteristics. Nice wine to be paired with salads, seafood or poulty.

Smell : Fresh green vegetables, flora, buttery smell.

Taste : Water melon, lemon-acidity/aromatic.

After-taste : Slightly bitter with acidic finish similar to cucumber.

Wine Entry : Marlborough Mud House Sauvignon Blanc 2004 (New Zealand)

Tasted this bottle at Jasons Marketplace Orchard Towers Branch with C.K. He is waxing lyrical about New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs. Never knew that the underground cellar area of Jasons at this outlet had some chairs and a table for on the spot drinking. The service was excellent; the nice auntie from Jasons even provided wine glasses and ice in a bucket to chill this white wine.

Smell : Fresh cut flora smells, slightly citrus inviting bouquet.

Taste : Melon, peaches and lime. Overall light and refreshing.

After-taste : Slightly acidic and lemony.

Description at the back of the label :

History – In 1993 John and Jennifer Joslin salied into the Marlborough Sounds and tasted their first wines. The quality from this premium wine region so impressed them they purchased the land and planted their own vineyard. The first Mud House wine was released in 1996. The name Mud House comes from the rammed earth house they have built in the middle of their home vineyard.

Enjoying – A powerful lifted nose showing aromas of passion fruits, gooseberry, honeysuckle and underlying tropical notes. The palate is light bodied, dry, crisp and satisfying with rich guava and nettles with just a hint of lime. Mouthwatering acidity leads to a long lingering finish. Perfect for immediate drinking, this wine will be at its best over the next 1-2 years.

Wine Entry : South Crossing Ice Wine Riesling Marlborough Region 2004 (New Zealand)

We opened this bottle of wine on New Year’s day, it was a gift from my uncle, whom I believe got it from DFS at Changi Airport. This is the gold label one which costs about S$45. Straw light in colour, more reminiscence of a chardonnay than an ice wine.

Smell : Lemony, flora smell with more a chardonnay smell.

Taste : Light sweetness, smooth, lemon citrus and generally not overpowering.

After-taste
: Relatively short finish without any bitter orange peel taste common in noble rot wines.

Description at the back of the label :

Created from vineyards in the greater Marlborough region. The carefully nutured vines produce premium fruit for this vintage ice wine riesling. After the harvest, an extended period of sub zero handling in the winery has further enhanced the balance between fruit sweetness and natural grape acidity. Powerful lime and citrus fruit bouquet with rich luscious apricot and lime flavours that linger long and full on the palate.

Wine Entry : Sauternes Maison Johane’s Boubee Reserve 2004 (French)

Got this bottle of wine from the Carrefour wine fair, and we opened it during the Christmas celebrations together with the Champagne. It has a golden straw clear colour and costs S$32.50.
I was probably attached to the label since it had a motif of a lion, since now is the Chronicles of Nardia hype. Quite a delightful sweet dessert wine to drink from the Sauternes region, but somewhat lacking in the complexity and fullness.

Smell : Sweet sea smell with faint lychee-apricot aromas.

Taste : Sweet light and refreshing similar to lemon-orange jam/marmalade.

After-taste : A slightly bitter orange peel finish.
