I went for dinner at the Jumbo Restuarant near Robertson Quay and was pleasantly surprised to see a Kiosk stand beside the river featuring Wolf Blass Wines. I think it is a innovative new concept whereby people can swing by the Kiosk, get a glass of wine and chill out beside the river. It helps to dispell the myth that wine is exclusive. Wish them all the best of luck, and pardon the poor lighting in the picture.

Dr N K Yong will be organising a fund-raising wine dinner this coming January for his 85th birthday. He has given Singapore Children’s Society 15 tables to sell, and they have approached me to help spread the word for the public to participate. It is anticipated that about 30 vintners from Austria, France, Germany, Italy and Spain have shown interest.

The dinner will be held at Capella Sentosa, 6th of January 2012 at 7.00pm. Guest chefs includes Tetsuya Wakuda (Waku Ghin, Marina Bay Sands Singapore), Nam Nguyen (Les Amis Restaurant Group) and Dr. Yong’s wife Mrs. Melina Yong, who is known for whipping up dinners that complement Dr. Yong’s wine.

Ms. Serena Sutcliffe, M.W., Head, International Wine Division, Sotheby’s, London and New York and Mr. David Peppercorn, M.W., Wine Consultant, London, will also be present and there will be an open auction conducted during the dinner and a silent auction, where the items up for auction will be on display at the banquet hall.

Wine News : US director Coppola likens film with wine-making

HONG KONG - US film director and multi-Oscar winner Francis Ford Coppola on Sunday likened movie-making to his other great passion, wine, as he attended a prestigious trade fair in Asia's new wine hub Hong Kong.

The director of modern classics such as "Apocalypse Now" and "The Godfather" trilogy told reporters at the opening of the Winefuture expo that the process of producing a fine wine had features in common with directing a great film.

"Cinema and wine-making are similar in three areas," Coppola told a packed room of journalists. "You have the gathering of source material, choosing from the material, and the adding of the finishing touches."

But, he added, he had no immediate plans to give the subject the big screen treatment.
"I am Italian American, I recall wine at the table since my earliest memories," Coppola said. "I got into wine purely because I love it, not as a businessman."
Hong Kong became a regional wine centre after the southern Chinese city's government abolished duties on wine imports in 2008, helping the market expand beyond a handful of local connoisseurs and expatriates.

"I am very impressed by the changes (in Hong Kong) and gladdened by the removal of the duties (on wine)," Coppola said.

Winefuture is an annual gathering of some of the most important wine personalities around the world.

The three-day conference this year features one of the world's most influential wine critics, Robert Parker.

Hong Kong has become a gateway to the booming wine market in mainland China, which is expected to be the world's sixth largest wine consumer by 2014, according to leading global wine and spirits promoter Vinexpo.

[Commentary] Duh...Wine is a luxury item and part of discretionary spending. So when the economy takes a stumble, naturally people will put off spending moo-lah on expensive wines.

HONG KONG - Global wine auctions and investments will slow next year as the euro zone crisis and slowdown in the US economy take their toll on the wine industry, but Asia may prove slightly more resilient, said Pancho Campo, a Spanish wine expert.Fears of a Greek default that have roiled the world's financial markets and stubbornly high US unemployment rates have had an impact on recent auctions, with none of the auction houses this month selling 100 per cent of their lots."I think the economy has something to do (with it)," said Campo, president of the Wine Academy of Spain, who is on a visit to Asian cities this week to promote a wine conference in Hong Kong later this year.Though he compared the slowdown to the time when the dot com and real estate bubbles burst, he said in an exclusive interview with Reuters TV that he felt a bit of cooling was inevitable.

"(I am) starting to get the feeling that there was a bubble about wine investments and wine auctions. So for me, it's a natural trend that it was to slow down," he said."I don't think it's just going to explode, I think the market will just slow down and the market will find its place."Much of the recovery of the wine market in Europe will depend in large part on how fast the economies there recover and lift the uncertainty that its depressing the market.The United States was long a key market for Europe, but the slowing of the economy there as well has made many winemakers pin their hopes on Asia, he said - and rightly so. Wine collectors, particularly from Hong Kong, bought more than US$200 million (S$259 million) worth of fine wines at auction in the first half of 2011, nearly doubling the amount for the same period last year. Wine consumption in Asia has seen double digit growth over the past five to 10 years. Campo acknowledged that there is a "more positive" feeling in Asia, which he has visited eight or nine times.

"I see that there are two tiers in Asia. You have the top tie where you find fine Bordeaux Chateau and the very expensive wines, and that has been very successful," he said. "Then you have the lower tier where you have all the cheap stuff, where you have all the wines that sell for lower than 2 euros (S$3.50), 1 euro. In the middle, there's the big gap." He said that key for the future of the industry, particularly in places like Asia where the culture of wine needs to be developed, is to target the young people he termed "the millennials" - those aged 18 and 19 - and get them excited about wine. "Eventually they'll go to university, they'll become CEOS, doctors, architects and that's the kind of people that you want involved in the wine industry," he said. "They might invest, they might not invest, but if they become drinkers, they will drink regularly, and as they get more familiar with wines they will trade up and buy more expensive wines. That is the category that has to grow if the Asian wine trade wants to be successful."

Giant is having another promotion on their wines. The truth is that I have never tasted Tall Horse wines. But it being South African, I think it is worth a try, though I wouldn't put too much hope except for expecting a fruity uncomplicated wine.

The attraction is probably the 4 glasses of Riedel Ouverture Red Glasses FREE when you buy 24 bottles of wine. (i.e. 2 cases). So if you are a big quaffer, then the deal is pretty interesting. It does seem to be an overkill though.

I had Sunday morning Dim Sum at Shaw Centre's Kam Boat Restaurant and found that they have a very nice poster of the Mouton Rothschild Wine Labels hanging on the wall. Mouton Rothschild has a different artist to design their labels for every vintage. I could not resist and took a picture of it. I would love to have something like this hanging in my study room wall.

BTW the Dim Sum was also very good, try their own creation, salted egg custard and black sesame pao. Delicious!

Here's a little more background.

With the Liberation of France, to celebrate the return of the peace and to mark a new beginning, Baron Philippe conceived the idea of dedicating the vintage of 1945, one of the greatest of the century, to 'Année de la Victoire, the year of the Victory. He commissioned the young painter Philippe Jullian to produce a graphic design based on the "V" sign made famous by Winston Churchill during the war.

That exception became the rule, and from 1946 on a contemporary artist was commissioned every year to create an original work to illustrate the label. The relationship between the artists and the owners of Mouton has always been based on friendship and trust. But also on mutual independence. Every artist is at liberty, following his own inspiration, to interpret the themes of the vine, the pleasure of drinking or the symbol of the Ram.

Mouton is equally at liberty to reject a work if they consider it is not what they want or if it fails to fit the specific limitations of the label. The artists are paid no money for their work, but given instead a certain number of cases of wine of two different years, obviously including the year they provided the label.Since Baron Philipe's death in 1988, Philippine, the Baron's only daughter, has become wholly involved in Mouton and the family firm. It has become her responsibilty to choose the painter to illustrate the Mouton Rothschild label.

This is a very common question posed to me, therefore I am taking the opportunity to share with everyone (if you know already, no need to read further), the Singapore Duty-Free Concessions. Useful when you travel overseas and come back after a long flight to Singapore Changi Airport, but dun know what you can or cannot buy/bring in.

Bona fide travellers are entitled to duty-free allowance for spirits, wine and beer only if all of the following conditions are met: (a) You are 18 years old or above;

(b) You have spent 48 hours or more outside Singapore immediately before your arrival;

(d) The liquors are for your own consumption; and

(e) The liquors are not prohibited under section 38 of the Customs Act.

You will given one of the options below:

Option A : 1 Litre Spirits, 1 Litre Wine, 1 Litre Beer

Option B : 2 Litres Wine, 1 Litre Beer

Option C : 1 Litre Wine, 2 Litres Beer

Bona fide crew members will be granted duty-free concessions on 0.25 litre of spirits, and either 1 litre of wine or 1 litre of beer.

Your GST relief and duty-free concessions are granted for your personal consumption only. It is an offence to sell or give them away.

Nice fragrance and bouquet had my hopes up, but failed in the palate with overpowering spice and tannic that threw the wine out of balance.

Will I buy it? No

Ch De Pressac St. Emillion 2006
Almost no aromas on the nose. On the palate it was smooth and welcoming, with good length, but needs a few more years for aging.

Will I buy it ? A begrudging maybe

The wine is named in honour of d'Arenberg's principle, Francis "d'Arry" d'Arenberg Osborn. Dryness -20 (that is minus 20!) and therefore fairly sweet. Alcohol 11 percent.

Polished away 35 percent of sake rice to make. Enjoy it chilled. It is a soft and refreshing flavour sake

Own tasting notes : Light and refreshing, mild sweetness, fragrant subtle plum/prune flavour.

Buy again? The small bottle is helpful, so a moderate yes

I gave this wine to CK a couple of weeks ago, he opened and enjoyed it so much that he shared with me that it was an excellent SB from New Zealand, "crisp taste, nice bouquet and even tasted better one day in the fridge!"

Definitely a good wine pairing with a nice salad or fatty fish.

An old article on New Zealand's Pinot Noirs. Excellent quality from regions like Martinborough, Wairarapa and of course the famous Central Otago. Good value for money and definitely more varied and interesting than their cookie cutter cousins Sauvingon Blanc. New Zealand has defintely done a fine job with the tempermental and finicky Pinot Noir grapes.

Takashimaya basement has undergone a renovation. It now has Harrods and several new Japanese themes stores outside of the cold storage. There used to be an Oaks Wine Cellar there. Now the newly opened wine shop is ENOTECA Co. Ltd. It has just opened 4 days ago.

Interestingly they have a very elaborate showcase with Mouton Rothschild from the various years as well as Chateau d'yquem in magnum and super magnum bottles. Their targetted customer base appears to be similar to Oaks, with the focus on luxury French wines.

They are having their Grand opening sale now...defintitely worth a look.

Wine Fair : Wine for Asia 2010 (Marina Bay Sands)

This year Wine for Asia 2010 has taken the event up a notch in venue to the Marina Bay Sands Convention Centre. Whilst it is a classy new location, the layout and the appearance within the exhibition hall itself was pretty normal. Also the location was not very easy to find with two levels above ground and Wine for Asia in the basement.

Per tradition, the most sought after booth was the Bordeaux Grand Tasting, 2007 being the featured vintage. After the tasting, it again proved to me that the wines after 2005 were not much to crow about and it would be better putting off further investments in them. However, I must say that the Sauternes were still exceptional and Chateau Climens was intense, full of honey flavour and delivered delicious flora confidence.

Wine style asia awards were given again this year and the "award winning" wines were displayed for open tasting. Whilst there were certainly some impressive aussie wines, but after tasting a couple of Thailand and Russian ones, I really wonder if they should be placed in the same class? Is there gulit of awarding wines just because the vineyards participate? Are we running out of good wines to allocate awards?

I wonder where the next venue for 2011 Wine for Asia will be ?

More good news for wine lovers, The Wine Company is opening their next outlet at Changi Village Hotel (planned for mid-Nov 2010). I happened to be there for a training course and saw the notice and future wine shop location. It was formerly a souvenir shop, a small outlet tucked at the beginning of the hotel. I give kudos to The Wine Company for finding relaxed, comfortable, tranquil areas for their outlets.

The owner of The Wine Company suggests that "if you are planning on visiting, here's a little tip: Instead of the shorter route via the PIE, drive via the tarmac of the airport. It may be a longer way, but I always enjoy this more scenic route. After all, I am not in a hurry; there is beauty in the road less travelled."

Wine TV : Kami-no-Shizuku (Japanese drama) 2009

I got to be aware of this Wine-intense Japanese drama called Kami no Shizuku (translated as "The Drops of the Gods") sometime last year when it was launched but I managed to watch a couple of episodes only this weekend. It was adapted from a Manga comic, except it had a more fancy name "Les Gouttes de Dieu".

The story revolves around Kanzuki Shizuku, a young man who was estranged from his father, a world-famous wine critic. When his father passed away, he left behind a wine collection worth 2 Billion Yen, but in order to inherit it, Shizuku must solve a series of tests left by his father to identify 6 wines. His competitor is Tomine Issei, a prominent wine critic, whom his father adopted before his death.

Overall, it is an entertaining drama for wine buffs, with lots of references to the 1st Growths, Burgundy wine, and in general very much French focused. (Which is also why the Japanese have a penchant for LV, Hermes, Longchamp etc..) The actors and actresses in the drama are also a draw for non-wine lovers as eye-candy. However, some of the antics in the show were over the top, especially decanting of the wine like pouring teh-tarik.

Carrefour held their at Plaza Singapura Atrium from 29 July 2010 to 1 Aug 2010.

Interestingly Carrefour is also carrying Mercer's Wine Ice Cream. There were sampling available and the Peach White Zinfandel actually tasted like Rum and Raisin ice cream to me.

Usually I do not associate Giant with wine sales, however, these Wolf Blass Yellow Label wines are value for money and very enjoyable to quaff.

The Yellow Label Moscato was a big hit during one of my relative's wedding dinner, fruity, sweet, pleasing with tiny sparkling bubbles.

Digging through my collection of wines, I found this bottle of Sword Select which I bought in Melbourne's Queen Victoria market. Exceedingly good value for money and tastes really good.

Smell : Mild, fragrant honey

Taste : Akin to thick viscous honey, with a slight flora grass at the end

Description in the front of the bottle : The luscious wine displays an abundance of citrus marmalade and honey characteristics that give it a smooth palate and a lingering finish.

I was surprised by this news article claiming that China has already overtaken Australia in terms of quantity of wine produced. However, it looks like a good deal of it was consumed domestically. Only 8.5 per cent of bottled wine was imported. We have already started to see some Chinese wine in the Singapore market, but thankfully we are pampered with a range of wines from France to Australia to USA.

News on the Asset Wine Management Fiasco. It is also sad that the reputation of wine has been tarnished because of a few black sheep. This is the second Wine investment company after Universal Asset Group.

The old adage still applies everywhere be it wine/investments/money "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is." Do you seriously expect to get returns of 20 percent within a period of two to three months? Nonetheless, my sympathy to those investors who were deceived by these con people.

This was a bottle of wine I picked up at the previous Carrefour Wine fair. It is interesting in the sense that we have a local wine community website "the Local Nose" that recommended it. Therefore, I thought it would be really exciting to taste a wine that was recommended by the Singapore Wine experts. My comments are that they have done a fairly decent job in recommending a wine that was reasonably priced @ S$28.90 and pleasant to drink.

Smell : Blackcurrent aromas, but muted

Taste : Smooth and easy, not fruit driven ripness as expected from a 2003. Classic bordeaux.

After taste : Structured tannins that would have appreciated some age to them.

Description at back of bottle : The engraving featured on the label is taken from the book "Bordeaux et ses vins" published by Editions Feret in 1898. It depicts the chateau as it was constructed in 1868.

The wine has the rich, dark, sensual taste of very mature fruit. It balances classical elegance and an all consuming sensuality, doubtless becuase it is equal parts of Cabernet and Merlot.

Got this bottle from Carrefour at $35. It was a orange-gold colour in the glass, high level of temptation but kinda of disappointing upon tasting.

Smell : Citrus orange peel intertwined with alcohol and spice.

Taste : A little over the hill, orange-lemon. No overwhelming honey influence.

After-taste : Tinge of bitterness and oak at the end.

Smell : Mild blackcurrent still emboding significant alcohol amounts

Mangosteen Wine from Thailand

Made by Chiang Rai Winery of Thailand, the smell mimiced a normal wine pretty well. But the flavours were so odd and medicinal that I would recommend staying away till it improves in the future.

Smell: Sweetish, cherry candy

Taste: Ripen cherry and flora driven flavours, invites the second sip

After taste : Some fruity acidity

Wine for Asia 2009 was held this year at Suntec City Convention Centre at hall 403-404.

I managed to squeeze sometime off to attend on the friday afternoon session.

Good number of wine booths and display of wines for tasting and reviewing. With a special session for Australia wines in the evening.

What I particularly liked about this year was the great bordeaux tastings of both 2005 and 2006! Just a side by side comparison of the wines confirmed that I had made the right decision on stocking up on the 2005s. They were a notch above the 2006s in terms of intensity and drive.

Hi all, managed to find time to visit Crystal Wine's French Wine Fair and I was not disappointed. Bought three bottles of sauternes and two bottles of red bordeaux. There was generous tasting samples of about 20 wines. Wines that were available for tastings were highlighted prominently at their respective racks.

Bought this at the NZ airport in a two bottle bundle for ~NZ$20. It is a steal considering how much more it will cost here in Singapore.

Did not have the full wine tasting review, but I would say it is over average on the sweetness and very much an aromatic and fragrant wine.

Description at back of bottle : This singel vineyard wine is grown in the Judd FAmily Vineyard in Gisborne. A tropical spicy sweet wine with lifted floral fruit and a rich oily palate.

A wine trading and brokerage service shop has hit the newspapers after wine investors submitted complaints to CASE.
My personal opinion is that Wine is for drinking and there are lots of other investment vehicles available. With your eyes wide open, know what you are buying into. When I buy a bottle of wine from the supermarket, I know that I have the pleasure of savouring it's contents and have an opportunity for me to blog about it. If I put money into a Wine investment, I do not physically see the wine, or have an idea about how to sell it in an illiquid market. Quoting a well-known local columnist "Alternative investments such as raw land, art, wine and antiques, they are interesting and fun, but are thinly traded , hard to sell and rarely pay off as promised."

I have been approached many times to invest in Wine, I have yet to put a single cent in for the intention of trading wine for investment. I have however, purchased wines current vintages at relative lower prices, so that I can drink them later and not pay high prices for them. That is just supply and demand economics, less bottles as people drink them up, means higher prices. But bear in mind you have to pay the expenses for keeping them in good condition.

Bought a half-bottle to try Japanese wine made in Hokkaido for around S$12. A commendable attempt that is trying to mimic French Bordeaux region wines. Dark vibrant purple in the glass.
Smell : Blackcurrent and raspberry scents

Taste : Blend of wood and dark fruits interlaced with some sweetness.

After-taste : Some oak at the end but overall very pedestrian.

Two newpaper articles that talk about the 2008 Bordeaux. My personal view, though I have not had the opportunity to try the 2008s, is that they are not of the class as the 2005s. The sellers are talking it up to try to boost sales. With the Global Economic Recession, buyers are not biting.

"Served chilled on ICE, delicate bubbles"....
That's the catchphrase of this marketing wine. There was quite a bit of hype about this summer wine when it was launched in Australia, it is one of the few (if not only) wine that is being encouraged to drink with ICE. I had a taste of it and the closest analogy I could think of is 7up/Sprite with citrus grape flavours and alcohol included.
Not that it was unappetizing to drink, on the contrary it was nice and refreshing drink considering the blazing hot weather we had been getting in Singapore for the past few weeks.

Here are my own personal comments :

- It makes sense to taste the wine with the food-tasting prior to the actual dinner.

- Missing from the article was the common practice that getting a consignment basis makes budgetary sense as you can return unopened bottles of wine.

- Typically guests drink more red than white wine, therefore estimate 1.5-2 bottles of red for each table and 1 bottle of white per table. Assuming average drinkers.

- I disagree that only South African or South American wines will suit the taste of most guests, I have tried really good fruit, inexpensive australia wines and a french vin de pay St Pierre from Crystal Wines that was the hands-down favourite at a wedding dinner I attended last year.

- Wedding guest tend to drink more during Fri and Sat wedding dinners compared to those held on weekdays and sundays.

Sorry for this late posting of the field report at Harry's Wine Fair...a well attended affair with many expats attending and finger foods typical of a english pub.

What I felt was a good practice was the listings and descriptions of the various wines and prices in a binded booklet. Unfortunately, not everyone was diligent enough to look at the booklet and ended up asking the wine merchants. Overall my assessment is that it was a fairly successful events with the merchants getting good publicity with the correct target audience.

Wine Entry : Corner Stone Shiraz 2002 Victoria (Australia)

This was a gift from KT, kept it in the cellar for sometime and I believe it was the right decision to do so. The wine has mellowed well and tannins have broken down to the secondary flavours that give it the complexity.

Smell: Ripened fruit forward with oak, spice and alcohol-laden

Taste : Medium bodied, with slightly sweetish black current fruit flavours that does a star-burst in the mouth, then proceeds to go down easy.

After taste : Detectable pepperish and spicy flavours at the end

If my memory serves me right, I think I got this bottle of sweet wine at one of the Aussie airports. Screw cap opening with a pale lemon colouration in the glass.
Smell : Viscous akin to glycerol, tinge of lemon peel

Taste : Mild sweetness, dominating citrus acidity

After-taste : Fairly smooth, easy to down. Absence of the common bitter lemon peel end.

Carrefour held it's wine fair at the Plaza Singapura atrium from the 3 Mar - 15 Mar. I just managed to catch the last day at the fair. Cornerstone Cellars were there promoting their range of wines. The number of french wines from the 2005 has been declining as expected, though there were still many bottles of La Tour Carnets.

Knowing I am such a wine buff, my USA colleague got this bottle of wine for me. I haven't seen it around in Singapore yet. In the glass it is an impressively dark, inky purple.

Smell : Alcohol driven with a large bouquet.

Taste : Gamey, leathery and animalistic in nature.

After taste : Nice smooth finish with silky tannins.

It was amazing! The intensity & balance of the palate and wonderful fragrant aromas was to die for...
The half bottle was not enough! Hope I will have a chance to drink more of this label in the coming "Niu" Year...

Mr NK Yong wrote a very insightful article on what to do in the current financial uncertainty - for Wine. I will have to agree with him, now (or a little more down the road) is the time to buy the wines that were over-priced out of the common market for most people. The only point I find unconvincing is that the Reserve de la Comtesse (2nd wine of Pichon Lalande) 2000 is still going for ~US$100. Crystal Second Wines of Great Bordeaux Estates Mega Offer for the 2005 vintage was S$69.30.

The wine shops locally have been sending out numerous sales for the x'mas, new year and CNY. So it is a good time to go shopping if you have the cash to spare. Patience in terms of searching around as well as patience to wait for these great wine to mature is needed.

Wine Vineyard Visit : Ascension Estate (New Zealand)

Managed to find sometime during my trip to NZ to visit another vineyard and had a relaxing lunch (grilled pork chop with herb butter) there accompanied by a nice glass of Gewurtraminer. The sweet potato chips are divine. The vineyard is tucked away on a cosy country road 3 min off the road from Warkworth in the North Island of NZ. It has a nice cellar door and an indoor as well as veranda sitting area for meals.

Ascension "flotsam & jetsam" East Coast Gewurztraminer - Description on the menu

The grapes for this wine comes from two tiny, impeccably cared for East Coast vineyards. We have brought this vinous Flotsam & Jetsam ashore at Matakana to create our Gewurztraminer, arguely the most distinct of all varieties

Structure - off dry soft medium bodied.

Flavours- turkish delight, rose petal, guava and lychee

1995 and 1996s were notedly better years for bordeaux. This Saint Emilion Grad Cru did not disappoint nor did it stand out significantly. And first things first, I had to even dig out the disintegrated cork and filter the contents.

Smell : Licorice, cocoa, faint blackcurrent scents

Taste : Mild tannins and smooth, slightly over the hill with focus on dark chocloate and cocoa.

After-taste : Still fairly structured length left in the wine.

This wine was purchased from DFS, and it was an encouraging golden yellow colour.
However, it disappointed tremedously.
Smell : Mild maple walnut, sandalwood scents.

Taste : Very flimsy and weak. Comprising of a palate of orange peel. It was a struggle to drink it.

After-taste : Flat & bitter peel. More suited as a salad dressing than a wine. Seemed to be pretty much over the hill.

Got a chance to try this delightful bottle of Pouilly-Fuisse at CHIJMES Lei Gardens on Thursday night with our good frens from NZ. It went well with the dishes such as roast pork and hairy crabs. The bouquet was fragrant flora and peachy. The flavour was distinctly minerally flint interlaced with lemon and nectarines. Mild mannered acidity at the end.

Okay okay..I did go down to the New Zealand Wine Fair at Water Front Grand Copthorne after the initial hesitation on how to go about the payment. They took the payment of $30 per pax at the door.

Quite a good turn out of generous & friendly New Zealand wine makers and distributors. The Central Otago's Pinots were still the outstanding "must drink" as well as the Sauvignon Blancs. Picked up a bottle of Seifried's Ice Wine which was delicious in the 2005 vintage. And even got a half bottle of Seifried's Sauvignon Blanc to take back home.

Some of the recommended wines tasted :

Amsifield Pinot Noir 2006 (NZ Central Otago) - The main crowd pleaser

Smell : Awash with raspberry and strawberry candy fragrance.

Taste : Smooth easy on the palate, dark cherry and cherry pits.

After taste : Comfortable easiness on the palate.

Felton Road Pinot Noir 2007 (NZ Central Otago)

Smell : Cherry oak and strawberry

Taste : Sweetish strawberry cheesecake like. Smooth and light.

After-taste : Finishes off with some citrus acidity. Lacking in length.

Rockburn Pinot Noir 2007 (NZ Central Otago)

Smell : Light strawberry wisps.

Taste : Ice cream soda sweetness, less complex. Made in a quaffing style.

After-taste : Silky smooth tannins

Quartz Reef Pinot Noir 2007 (NZ Central Otago)

Smell : Deep Raspberry.

Taste : Cheery raspberry, light bodied and smooth.

After-taste : Commendable finish but not overly complex.

Lorna from Auntsfield Estate was very nice to send me the tasting notes of the various wines at her booth at Wine for Asia 2008.

The number one, numero uno on my list is :

Auntsfield Estate Heritage 2005 Pinot Nior

This wine is only produced in exceptional years when a selection of wine exhibits amazingly defined character.
The resulting Pinot Noir is a pure expression of vineyard character. The aromatics are heady with complex fruit and earthy character. They seem to both tantalize and seduce until the wine is tasted and the journey continues. The palate shows layers of silky texture, dark fruit and savoury flavors that reveal, evolve, express and continue. An expression of place for us all to enjoy.

Tasting Notes

Colour: Deep ruby/crimson, very intense.

Aroma: Black Doris plum, dark cherry, dried spices and Christmas cake with tobacco & cigar box notes. Dry forest floor, with underlying dark chocolate, coffee, vanilla and rich smoky oak.

Palate: Big rich fruit dominated by dark berry fruit, cherry and ripe spiced plums. A rich palate showing great complexly with interwoven spices, fruit and savoury flavours. The wine has a long rich finish with silky, ripe tannins and unbelievable length.

Long Cow 2008 Sauvignon Blanc

Really nice distinct aromatic scents, definitely showcases the best of NZ's Sauvignon Blancs.

Auntsfield Estate produces a distinctive style of Sauvignon Blanc. The style is aimed towards texture, complexity and length, balancing the typical Marlborough fruit spectrum and aromatics with richness and mouth feel. The fruit for this wine was grown on the original "Long Cow" Paddock, land used in colonial times to graze the Auntsfield house-cow.

Colour : Pale straw/gold.

Aroma : Lifted aromas of passionfruit, gooseberry and rich tropical fruits with hints of lemon and lime blossom.

Palate : Full, rich and elegant. This wine shows intense flavours of passionfruit and gooseberry balanced with ripe tropical fruit reminiscent of papaya, banana and wild honey. Underlying minerality balances the generous palate weight and mouth filling texture. A complex wine with a long lingering finish.

Cob Cottage 2007 Chardonnay

Aromatic layers of ripe stone fruit and nuances are integrated with a subtle sweet French Oak influence. The ripe full-bodied palate of pure fruit is balanced by mineral and citrus notes. An elegant wine showing both fresh vibrancy and rich depth. The grapes for this wine were grown near the site of an early Cob Cottage which was the home of Doctor Stewart, Marlborough’s first medical practitioner.

Colour : Rich straw gold

Aroma : Intense and complex. This wine displays aromas of peach, apricot, nectarine, mandarin and lemon blossom with a subtle sweet French Oak influence.

Palate : Intense pure stone fruit with a rich ripe texture and complex nuances. Apricot, nectarine, peach, butterscotch and toffee are balanced with elegant mineral and citrus notes. A wine of seamless length and complexity.

Wine Entry : Black Opal Barossa Valley 1999 (Australia)

Black Opals have a special place in my heart, opened this wine with my family and coincidentally there was a opened cheap plonk from Giant Supermarket. And the contrast was distinct. The Black Opal was opulent with alcohol and an overall fruit explosion even for a 1999. Whereas the plonk was weak thin and diluted. Good stuff, cannot bluff.

A blend of Cab Sav 85% and Merlot 15%. Impressively dark red-purple colour for a 1999 wine.

Smell : Nice aroma of high alcohol, aldehydes and dark currents.

Taste : Smooth flavourful, mid palate of blackcurrents and prunes.

After-taste : Excellent evolved mild tannins which provide good structure

The limited release Black Opal Barossa has been produced to showcase the best regional characteristics of the varieties for which this most famous of Australian wine making regions is renowned. Sourced from our own Tolley's vineyard, this is a richly textured wine that exemplifies the powerful robust red wine characteristics of the Barossa Valley. The Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot vines in this vineyard grow in low fertile, sandy brown/grey soils and have an average age of 40 years. As a consequence the berries are smaller and have greater intensity of colour and flavour.

Both the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot were fermented in traditional 4 ton open vat fermenters before beng gently pressed in a Basket Press and allowed to mature in French oak barrels for 20 months. This wine is a rich, powerful Cabernet Merlot that displayes concentrated complex fleshy mixed berry and spice characters with hints of violets and chocolate.
